Traditional rust removal in industrial environments uses one of three approaches: mechanical (grinding, wire brushing, sandblasting), acid-based chemical (hydrochloric, sulphuric), or oil and wax-based inhibitors applied to slow future rust. Each has limitations in a production or maintenance workflow.
Mechanical removal: the limitations
- Cannot reach internal surfaces, threads, or recesses.
- Generates sparks — a risk in fuel or solvent environments.
- Creates airborne metal dust — a health risk in enclosed spaces.
- High consumable cost — grinding discs and wire wheels wear quickly on corroded steel.
- Leaves a rough surface that may need additional prep before painting.
- Labour-intensive on high surface area or complex parts.
Hydrochloric acid: the limitations
- Aggressive — attacks bare metal as well as rust.
- Strips zinc on galvanised steel.
- Requires immediate coating after treatment to prevent flash rust.
- Fumes require ventilation and full PPE.
- Higher risk profile for storage, handling, and disposal.
Oils and waxes: the limitations
- Do not remove existing rust — they slow new rust on clean surfaces.
- Require degreasing before painting or further processing.
- Not suitable in clean or food-adjacent environments.
- Provide temporary protection only.
What Corrosion Assassin does differently
Corrosion Assassin is phosphoric acid-based, water-carried, and applied ready to use. It removes rust on contact through chemical reaction, not mechanical abrasion. It reaches internal surfaces, threads, and recesses that grinding cannot access. It does not attack zinc on galvanised steel at the same rate as hydrochloric acid. The iron phosphate layer it leaves is stable — the surface does not flash rust and does not require immediate coating.
It does not replace all mechanical prep in every application. On heavy mill scale or very thick rust deposits, mechanical removal first reduces the volume of chemical treatment required. The two methods are complementary in heavy-rust industrial applications.

Where it does not apply
Corrosion Assassin is not a degreaser. Surfaces with oil or grease contamination must be cleaned before treatment. It is not suitable for food-contact surfaces. It is a Class 8 corrosive under transport regulations — handle with appropriate PPE and follow the Safety Data Sheet.
