Not all rust removers work the same way. The acid used in the formulation determines what happens to the surface after rust is removed — and whether you need additional preparation before painting.
The chemistry in plain terms
Rust is iron oxide — the product of iron reacting with oxygen and moisture. Phosphoric acid reacts with iron oxide and dissolves it. The chemical reaction produces iron phosphate and water. The iron phosphate is water-soluble and is removed when the surface is rinsed or wiped.
What remains on the metal surface after the rust is removed is a thin layer of iron phosphate that has bonded to the metal surface. This layer is stable — it does not oxidise further — and it is mildly abrasive at a microscopic level, which improves mechanical adhesion for paint.
Why phosphoric acid is different from hydrochloric acid
Hydrochloric acid is a more aggressive rust remover. It dissolves rust faster. It also attacks bare metal below the rust, weakens zinc coatings on galvanised steel, and leaves a surface that can flash-rust rapidly if not primed immediately after treatment.
Phosphoric acid is selective — it reacts primarily with iron oxide. The reaction rate on bare steel is much lower. On galvanised steel, it does not attack the zinc coating in the same way. The surface produced is stable and does not require immediate coating to prevent flash rust.
What the iron phosphate layer means for painting
- Paint adhesion is improved — the phosphate layer gives paint a micro-textured surface to bond to.
- The surface is chemically stable before painting — no ongoing oxidation that the paint has to resist.
- Primer can often be eliminated — the phosphate layer substitutes for the adhesion function of a primer in many applications.
- Flash rusting risk is reduced — treated surfaces do not require the urgency of immediate coating that hydrochloric acid-treated surfaces do.
What Corrosion Assassin contains
Corrosion Assassin is a water-based formulation containing phosphoric acid (10–25% concentration). It is classified as a Class 8 corrosive under UN1805 regulations for transport. It is applied undiluted. Do not dilute before use — the concentration is formulated for the application.
